Cr John Wharton was re-elected as Mayor in March 2008. He continues to run cattle, goats and camels on the family property at Runnymede, North-West of Richmond. His contribution to the agricultural industry has been recgonised by the Department of Primary Industries who appointed John as their official Ambassador in 2007.

Councillor John Wharton was first elected to Council in 1991 and became Mayor in 1997. In 2007 John was awarded a Certificate of Long Service for 15 years as Mayor of Richmond by the Council and the Local Government Association of Queensland.

On 11 June 2007 was the recipient of a Member of the Order of Australia Award for his service to the community of North-west Queensland through local government, regional development, natural resource management and primary industry organisations. He also received the Centenary Medal for distinguished service to local government.  Long Service plaque from Richmond Shire Council in recognition of ten years service and commitment to the Shire as Mayor in March 2007.  John was re-elected to Council as Mayor on March 15, 2008.

Cr Wharton represents the Richmond Shire at Regional Road Groups, Budget Review Committee, Local Disaster Management Group (Chair), Deputy President MITEZ, Northern Outback Development Forum (Chair 2010), Flinders River Agricultural Precinct, Local Government Association Qld, Ambassador Department of Primary Industries, the North Queensland Area Consultative Committee, Regional Planning Advisory Committee.
