The majority of sharks in Kronosaurus Korner are lamnid sharks. They are members of the same family as the Mako and Great White Sharks that are still alive today. Although these are fearsome sharks today, in the Cretaceous period (100 million years ago) they had strong competition from large predatory fish such as Cooyoo and marine reptiles such as the ichthyosaur, Platypterygius, and pliosaurs like Kronosaurus.
Shark skeletons are made of soft cartilage tissue rather than bone so they generally do not fossilise well. On the other hand shark teeth are commonly found as fossils as they are made out of a hard substance called enamel and because sharks shed their teeth throughout life.
